Q: What was the client’s / instructor's requirement for this project?

答:客户要求建造一处用于科研和生产防御型电子雷达系统材料的建筑设施。艾斯兰设施是一个“高科技”工厂,设有办公空间、研究设施、生产区及社交空间。

A: The client requested a facility that would accommodate the research and production of materials for electronic radar systems used for defensive purposes. The Aselsan Rehis facility is a"high-tech factory"incorporating office spaces, research facilities, production areas and social spaces as well.

Q: Kindly describe the conceptual basis of the project.

A: Aselsan REHIS, a campus situated in Gölbaşı-Ankara, is composed of a diversity of buildings such as: offices, procurement facilities, and a social center. The buildings are designed to respond to multiple technical and engineering requirements. Architectural elements of the campus design are organized and developed within a matrix system. Essentially, the programmatically diverse buildings are connected to each other by means of an arcade and an allé. This 18.65 m high arcade aids in developing a visual relationship with the Konya road that runs along the site. Structural, façade, and landscape elements, which are interrelated in the design's totality, are also part of this matrix system.

A: Structural elements are composed of a steel arcade, steel V shaped structures, and a steel canopy. Façade elements include: horizontal sun shades, a silicone façade system, along with sinter flex 1m x 3m ceramic tile façade panels. The procurement buildings are comprised of steel structures, while the office buildings are reinforced concrete. These steel structures are used to carry the main circulation corridors. These corridors, which are part of the buildings on two levels, are carried through the V shaped steel structures. The V shaped structures are then carried by a steel arcade system. The steel arcade structures that hold onto the building façade, exist as an independent element that continues in a linear path of 585 meters. Landscape elements are a combination of soft deciduous materials mixed with hard concrete materials.

A: The main architectural element is the arcade that follows the facade in its entirety, visually connecting the building to Konya Road that runs along the site. Not only is the arcade and the elevated allé a visual cue, it also serves the functional purpose of interior circulation, while providing a means to connect a diverse array of buildings.

Q: What was the client’s / instructor’s requirement for this project?

答:在西南太平洋岛国瓦努阿图,由于人口的增长,就学人群上升,使得教育需求持续扩大。当前教育基础设施的集中配置已无法满足相应需求。现有的混凝土类型建筑成本相对较高,耗时也相对较长,而且,在频繁遭遇地震和飓风之后,难以修复。当务之急就是要在满足西方建筑标准的同时,提高当地材料及工艺的使用。

A: In Vanuatu the demand for access to education is growing due to population growth and increased school attendance. The current centralised delivery of education infrastructure cannot keep pace with demand. The existing archetype concrete buildings are costly and time consuming to build and difficult to repair following the regular earthquakes and cyclones. The brief was to increase the use of local materials and skills whilst meeting western construction standards.

答:该设计旨在确保建筑结构能够抵御地震与飓风的侵袭基础上,同时提高当地材料及建筑工艺在教室建设过程中的使用。极具西方设计风格的木制门式框架体现了铰接柱及剪刀状门架的本土特色,从而构成了核心结构的完整性。该结构使当地社区得以根据可用资源定制建筑,同时也便于当地人对建筑进行保养并在灾后对非结构性组件进行修复。

A: The design aims to increase the use of local materials and skills in the construction of classrooms whilst ensuring the structure would be earthquake and cyclone resistant. The use of a western engineered timber portal frame, reflecting the local vernacular of articulated posts and scissor trusses, forms the core structural integrity. This is able to be in filled by the community to customise the building depending on available resources. This also facilitates local maintenance and post disaster repair to non structural elements.

Q: What materials are used in this project, why and where?

答:该建筑所用材料几乎全部就地取材,有助于降低运输成本,并为当地人创造谋生机会,同时还能大大降低施工成本,使同样的成本能够建造两倍的校舍资源。该建筑为木制结构,所用混凝土加入了当地的沙土和砾石,窗户由竹子编成,屋顶由树叶编成,而外墙则由当地已死亡的珊瑚礁建造而成。

A: The building is almost exclusively constructed of local material. This limits the requirement for transportation and creates livelihood opportunities within communities. It also significantly reduces the cost of construction enabling twice as many classrooms to be constructed for the same cost. The building structure is timber, concrete uses local sand and gravel, window hatches are woven bamboo, the roof is woven leaf and the external walls are constructed using locally collected dead coral stones.

A: The building is based on the existing standard classroom building layout. Two classrooms are accessed off an inset veranda. Between the classrooms is a staff office and storeroom / library. The design allows for variation in classroom size by adjusting the length of the building in either direction.

Population growth in Vanuatu has created a requirement for 200 more classrooms to meet enrolment demand. Currently the Ministry of Education (MoE) constructs 30-40 classrooms per year using a centralized delivery model. The development of the 'hybrid' design and the construction of the demonstration building at Takara presents an alternative model for meeting this demand. By utilizing almost exclusively local materials and labor for its construction the design facilitates a decentralized model. The total expenditure for the construction was $54,500. This compares with the average cost of construction on Efate Island of the standard concrete classroom of $105,000. This is a saving of 48% on a direct comparison of the 2 buildings. This saving increased available expenditure on additional classrooms within the MoE's program.In addition the design enabled the Takara and neighboring communities to benefit from a greater proportion of local labor and materials such as natangkura and the woven bamboo window hatches. The total amount spent on local materials was $4500 which was 10% of the material costs. In future projects where timber will be milled locally this figure will increase to 50% of material costs. In the case of Takara, an additional $6,000 was spent on community labor. 

 

The building uses significantly less concrete and water during construction. Both the imported timber and timber grown locally are a renewable resource. Transportation was also reduced by using less concrete. By using a local palm leaf roof, a renewable resource, the building prevented the use of approximately 250m2 of corrugated steel roof sheeting. Likewise with the bamboo window hatches which replaced the usually used flat steel sheeting. These measures where a significant improvement in terms of sustainability.The time frame for construction was also reduced from the existing concrete design. The project took 8 months to construct, however future projects are expected to take between 4-5 months. The existing concrete classrooms take approximately 10 months to construct. This is a 20% saving in time. The quality of the space has also been improved. There is anecdotal evidence that student engagement and learning has improved in the new building.  Through the use of fixed louvers and other passive ventilation was increased by 3 times over the standard classroom design. Natural light was also increased by 20%. Thermal comfort was drastically improved through the use of thatched roofing.

A: To design a house that was located on a city plot with a crossroads at the north-east corner. To protect the existing tree.

Q: Kindly describe the conceptual basis of the project.

答:该住宅的设计与建造主要围绕一棵枝叶繁茂的古树展开。单纯的禁欲主义建筑形式成为主体背景,与大树相互映衬间,形成了住宅外部的中央景观展示区。大树随着季节的变化而变化,象征着时光的流逝。宅内中庭是该住宅建筑的核心区,为住宅主人提供了一处理想的私密冥思之所。中庭两侧都安有玻璃幕墙,这样便可从住宅中的各个角度观赏古树。该住宅坐落于城区某十字路口东北角处一块空地上,深邃的建筑结构使其远离喧嚣的街道,并形成繁华城区中一处静谧的缓冲带。

A: The principal reference for the design of this house is a Tree.The pure ascetic architectural form becomes a background, entwining and framing the central exhibit. The Tree becomes a barometer of transition which gauges the elapsing time through seasonal change.The internal atrium is the central focus of the house. It provides a safe and private place for contemplation. The atrium, glazed from either side, allows the presence of the Tree to penetrate deep into the internal spaces of the house. The house was located on a city plot with a crossroads at the north-east corner. The intentional form of the building turns away from the street and serves as a buffer from the bustling city.

Bogusław Barnaś, founder of BXBstudio, has obtained many years of professional experience working in Poland, England and Scotland. He has worked in many internationally renowned practices such as Foster and Partners, Make Architects and Ingarden-Ewy Architects. He completed his architectural education at Cracow University of Technology and Fachhochschule Muenster in Germany. He is a tutor at Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University (AFMKU) at the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts.

BXBstudio, established in December 2009, is an interdisciplinary design studio which attempts to creatively challenge issues in the fields of urbanism, architecture, art, design, graphics and publishing. In design work, the studio draws inspiration from Polish history and tradition, re-thinking traditional motifs and adapting them to contemporary design. In recent projects, the studio dwelled on folk notions such as the Zakopane Style or timber sacral architecture.

In creative practice, BXBstudio places great emphasis on the relationship between man and nature. This aspiration is reflected in the character of places created – from urban schemes, to built forms and interiors. His professional experience includes work on different scale projects ranging from family houses to groundbreaking icons such as The Walbrook office building in the city of London, UK (Foster and Partners), competition - winning headquarters building for fashion brand ESPRIT edc in Ratingen, Germany (Make Architects), Pier One - energy efficient office building in Edinburgh (Make Architects), Museum of Polish History in Warsaw, Poland (Ingarden & Ewy Architects in cooperation with Arata Isozaki, Japan), extension of Bayer - Aspirin Headquarter in Warsaw (Ingarden & Ewy Architects in cooperation with AiB agiplan integrale bauplanung, Germany).

缅甸克伦邦持续数十载的武装冲突导致每天都有许多难民和移民涌入临近的泰国。泰国湄索镇与缅甸边境仅相距数公里,这里有许多学校和孤儿院为难民和移民提供住所和教育。儿童发展中心学校便是其中之一,该学校由梅道诊疗所管理,接收了500多名学生。由于缺乏足够的空间,且考虑到在某些情况下需立即为新生提供住处,该校不得不着手打造新型低成本临时宿舍,以方便组装,并尽可能多地利用再生材料。 
 

梅道诊疗所委托泰国建筑公司a.gor.a architects为其设计临时宿舍及培训教室,以作为梅道诊疗所的新培训中心校区。驻曼谷的卢森堡大使馆为四栋宿舍的建设提供了资金。第一栋宿舍于2012年4月建成,耗时四周,可容纳25名学生。该建筑融入当地环境,符合当地人的生活习性。建筑内部的布局保证了空间的开放和通风且具有半私密性。此外,建筑内还设有储藏空间,可供学生使用。该建筑所用材料取自当地,为使用者所熟知,便于保养,从而降低了保养成本。
 

一栋临时宿舍的主要成本集中在由再生木材建成的结构,占建筑总施工成本的70%,且可在未来以原价的80%转售。宿舍的墙体、地板及屋顶还使用了竹子及茅草。如未经过预处理,这些材料无法维持两年以上。但是,这些材料一年四季都容易获得,且价格对当地人而言也较为实惠和稳定。宿舍所用再生木材来自镇上的废旧建筑,由拆迁人员小心剥离留作它用。木材经过打磨、去钉并锯切至适当尺寸,方便每个木架的拆卸和迁址重装。泰缅边境可利用的木材多为柚木,其质量堪称世界之最。但是近年来,由于边境的乱砍乱伐及非法贩卖,使得该木材的价格上涨了3倍之多。因此,为了降低新建筑的成本,当地人越来越多地对木材进行回收利用。当地人对木材了如指掌,故将木材作为主要建材有助于保护当地人的传统建筑工艺。

 

作为建筑产品的再生木材至关重要,有助于提高行业及当地社区对乱砍乱伐的认识并推动建设更多的环保项目。如今,已有五栋宿舍于2012年4月至7月期间建成,可容纳130名学生。每栋宿舍的大小均为775平方英尺(72平方米),所耗成本为2 178美元(1700欧元)。宿舍建成之后,建筑师们还着手设计新诊所,并于2013年9月开工。其他建筑的建设也在陆续进行中。

The armed conflict that has persisted for decades in the Karen State of Myanmar results in a daily flow of refugees and immigrants to neighbouring Thailand. In the Thai town of Mae Sot, a few kilometres from the Burmese border, numerous schools and orphanages offer accommodation and education for the refugees and immigrants. One of these centers, the CDC School (Children Development Center) under the tutelage of Mae Tao Clinic organisation, hosts more than 500 students. The lack of space and, in many cases, the need for immediate accommodation for new students has forced the School to present a new model of temporary low-cost dormitories that is easy to assemble and can be built by using as many recycled materials as possible. 
 

Mae Tao Clinic commissioned Thailand-based architecture firm a.gor.a architects to design its temporary dormitories and training classroom buildings as part of Mae Tao Clinic's new Training Center Campus. The Embassy of Luxembourg in Bangkok funded the construction of four dormitories. The first of four dormitories was built in April 2012 within four weeks. With a space capacity of 25 students, the building meets the modus vivendi by fitting into the local environment in which it is located. The interior layout ensures an open and airy space that offers semi-privacy and includes storage space for the students. The building materials used are locally available and well known to their users, thus allowing for easy maintenance and resulting in low maintenance costs. 
 

The main cost of a temporary dormitory is the structure made from recycled timber, which represents 70% of the total construction cost of the building, and can be re-sold in the future for 80% of its original price. Bamboo and thatch are also used for walls, floors, and roofs. Although these materials are not intended to last over two years without any pre-treatment, they are easily available every season and the cost is affordable and stable for the local people. The recycled timber used for the dormitories comes from old buildings in town that are carefully stripped and put aside by the demolition crew. The timber is polished, de-nailed, and sawn down to size. Every timber frame is easy to disassemble and assemble again in a new location. The quality of available timber, mainly teak, at the Thai-Burma border is told to be one of the best in the world. However, the price of the timber has risen by over 300 percent in the last few years due to the deforestation and the illegal trafficking along the border. Thus recycling timber has become popular among the local people in order to reduce the cost of the new buildings. Using timber as a main building material allows us to help preserve the traditional construction skills of the local people who are already very familiar with this material. 

 

Recycled timber as a construction product is important in both raising industry and local community awareness towards deforestation and promoting more environmentally friendly practices. To date, five temporary dormitories for 130 children have been built during the period of April to June in 2012. The size of each temporary dormitory is 775 square feet (72 square meters) and each of them costs $2,178 (1700 €). The architects are currently working on the new clinic, which will start construction in September 2013. Additional buildings are also in the works. 
 

a.gor.a architects was founded in 2012 by Albert Company Olmo, Jan Glasmeier, and Line Ramstad. This architecture office is based in Mae Sot, Thailand, and is working with marginalized groups, community based organizations, and NGO's along the Thai-Burma Border. Besides working on several school projects, a.gor.a architects have teamed up with the local construction group Gyaw Gyaw and are consulting for the local Mae Tao Clinic, a health centre that provides free healthcare for Burmese refugees and migrants, and to design and build the new Mae Tao Clinic. 
 

Jan Glasmeier is volunteering in Mae Sot for several community-based organizations such as Mae Tao Clinic, Social Action Woman, Gyaw Gyaw, etc. He was a lead architect for Arup Singapore during the construction of the Singapore Sports Hub, and was working for Foster + Partners in London on the Masdar City master plan in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Jan is aware that ecological and economical impacts will influence the way we live drastically today and in the near future, and that we are all committed to finding new and creative ways to react rapidly to these changes. In Thailand, he aims to promote the use of alternative and sustainable materials and participates in the construction of the New Medical Training Center of MTC, temporary CDC dormitories, etc. He also has raised funds for several charity projects by expanding the network of donors among the international architectural firms. Jan graduated in 2006 with a Diploma in Architecture from the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany. 

 

Co-founder Albert Company Olmo is working at Mae Tao Clinic as an architect and participating in the construction of the new medical and training facilities. With his experience in construction and design skills, the clinic is able to keep growing by ensuring the safety of the buildings and incorporating sustainable and renewable energy functions. He designed and coordinated the construction of: New In-patient, Reproductive Health and Counseling Department and other facilities such as the new Medical Training Center, temporary CDC dormitories, Child Recreation Center, etc. His main goal is to promote sustainability in construction by introducing alternative materials, promoting the importance of mapping the projects, creating networks among architectural organizations and conducting workshops for local staff. Albert graduated with a Technical Architecture degree from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Spain in 2007. 

 

Co-founder Line Ramstad's previous experience with several architectural firms in Norway brought her to Thailand in 2008 as a co-founder of TYIN to build the well-known Soer Ker Tye Houses (also known as the Butterfly Houses). In 2009, she founded the NGO Gyaw Gyaw. Alongside her group of Karen colleagues, she coordinated and designed the construction of the several schools, water facilities, and houses along the Thai-Burma Border. She participated as a constructor in building the New Medical Training Center of MTC. Her main goal is to empower the vulnerable Karen community at the border by implementing sustainable methods in terms of ecology, economy, and culture. This also includes focus on functionality and implementation of new techniques that often result in less use of materials and buildings that better answers the needs of the users. Line graduated with a Landscape Architecture degree from UMB – Norwegian University of Life Sciences in 2003 and also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Anthropology from NTNU–Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

问:项目客户或指导方对该项目的概念性设计具体有哪些要求?

Q: What was the client’s / instructor’s requirement for this project?

答:客户方要求设计建造一座可容纳80名老年人同时居住的敬老院建筑设施,其中每个楼层2间大型综合单元住房,每间房内设10间小微套房、1间公众餐厅、若干会客间以及洗浴室等。

A: Nursing home for the elderly for 80 residents.

Two units in each floor

Each unit has 10 bedsits, dinning room, day rooms, bathroom

 

问:请具体谈谈该项目的概念基础。

Q: Kindly describe the conceptual basis of the project.

答:该项目以景致迷人的富士山及其所属的伊豆山脉自然风光为背景,项目选址与建筑结构均旨在为居住于此的老年人营造舒适的寓所环境,增强彼此间的互动,进而丰富老年生活。坐拥怡人的自然风景,在季节的交替变换和时间的渐渐推移中,多彩的老年生活在这里愉悦地开展着,十分有益于老年人的身心健康。

除了清新、明朗的建筑外观以及建筑设计中的巧妙细节,实质上,合理、科学的建筑结构布局才是该项目的关键性功能因素的直接体现,为老年人的日常生活提供了诸多便利,创造了一系列人性化的居所与日常活动空间,充分利用周边的自然山景环境,丰富观景视角,使得人们身处建筑内任意空间,都能欣赏壮美山景。

A: This project aspires to encourage interaction between the residents in a setting beautified by a view of the Izu mountain range and topped by the uplifting scene of Mt. Fuji. In this richly adorned environs, the turn of the seasons and passage of time promotes a joy of living which supports healing of both mind and body.

Going beyond expression of the surface layer and even surpassing temporary wonder and inspiration, effective architecture works to directly affect daily life and people’s memories, is uniquely appropriate to its surroundings, and provides abundant linkage to the natural scenery and life.

 

问:在该项目的设计中,都应用了哪些材料?分别都用在哪里?为什么?

Q: What materials are used in this project, why and where?

答:由于受到项目预算的限制,我们必须首先确保建筑空间和各活动场所的安全性、功能性以及基本的美观度。因此,我们充分调动作为建筑设计师所应具备的洞察力与敏感度,确定最为合适的建筑材料与设计细节等重要因素,以寻求建筑与景观的最佳融合。

该项目主要采用钢材、玻璃和挤压水泥板等建筑材料,尤其在建筑物外墙上还采用波纹状科尔坦耐大气腐蚀的高强度钢质铺装材料,铺覆建筑外墙数年后,这种钢材的颜色将逐渐变深,并呈现出独特的钢质纹理和美观的明暗色泽。

A: Under a severer budget constraint, we have to realize safety, functional, and beautiful architectural space and place. Therefore we have sought for determining most suitable materials and details in order to give the best harmony to architecture and landscape in the environment by taking advantage of our insight and sensibility as possible as we have.

Primarily the building is designed in steel, glass and extruded cement panel

Especially the outer wall of the building was finished in corrugated COR-TEN steel metal sheet rusted, changing to a beautiful shade of deep colors and textures after a number of years.

 

问:请对建筑内各空间及其功能性布局相关情况进行详尽说明。

Q: Please elaborate on the various spaces, their functions and the space planning involved.

答:考虑到该项目的场地特点和周边环境,五层楼的建筑结构内特别设有一个内庭开放空间绿植庭园,此外,每层楼的露台空间内也都缀饰着各类绿植,以确保为老年人提供一处宁谧的居所。

该敬老院建筑各楼层的东、西、南、北四面以及公共活动空间和走廊、咨询区等处都设有绿植露台,与底层的内庭绿植庭园形成连续性的景观整体,且与周边自然山景和谐相融。

A: With consideration of the characteristics of the site and the surrounding environment, the five-storey structure envelopes an interior open space featuring a tree-filled garden and, on each floor, greenery dotted here and there in terraces to ensure a tranquil environment for the residents.

Maintaining an overall sense of continuity, the plant-adorned terraces located at the building’s north, south, east, and west, the common spaces, and the corridors and consultation areas that overlook the interior garden combine for transparency and interaction between external and interior scenery to create a harmony between individual and relational spaces.
