This 1960s house in suburban Melbourne has been overhauled by Branch Studio Architects to create a contemporary home for the original owners' granddaughter (+ slideshow).

The local firm was tasked with revamping the dream home of a pair of Jewish refugees – one a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp – who had arrived in Australia with little more than the clothes on their backs.

The couple had built the house as soon as they could afford to, and lived in it for the rest of their lives.

After they both died, it was passed down to their granddaughter Danielle and her husband Adam, who works as a writer – hence the project name, Writer's House.

The site where the new station design will occupy is situated on a vacant piece of land belonging to the Japan railway.Kengo Kuma’s proposal will be distinguished by the oversized roof measuring at 4,000 sqm and reference the art form of origami. The folded nature of the canopy will also be influenced by sliding shoji doors (with the translucent effect and a timber frame) and demonstrate architecture that inherently relates back to its context – in this case, Japan.

A tomb that was designed but never realised by modernist architect Adolf Loos has been built by British architect Sam Jacob in a historic London cemetery.

Sam Jacob Studio has erected the mausoleum that Loos designed for art historian Max Dvorák in 1921. It stands in Highgate Cemetery – arguably London's most famous burial ground, home to the graves of Karl Marx and Lucian Freud.

But while the Austrian architect's design was for a structure built from large stone blocks, London-based Jacob has created the ziggurat-like form using a lightweight timber frame and scaffolding net – making it transparent.

Jacob describes the structure as "a ghostly reenactment of an unrealised architectural idea".

"Though never built, the image of Loos' design has haunted architectural culture ever since," he explained.

Dominic Kuneman creates minimal interior for Sydney micro apartment

When renovating this tiny apartment in Sydney, Australian interior designer Dominic Kuneman adopted a minimal style to make the most of the small space.

The 35-metre-square apartment is set inside a 1950s block in the Bellevue Hill area of Sydney. Before Kuneman's renovation, it was rundown.

It featured an L-shaped kitchen bench that divided the living area in half, and a narrow doorway to the bedroom that obstructed light coming through to the main living space.

"The one-bedroom apartment had been given a terrible early 90s renovation and little to no repairs had been made since then," Kuneman told Dezeen.

  Vincent Callebaut

Vincent Callebaut has revealed plans to transform Brussels’ Botanic Center, a building originally constructed in 1977.With 274 identical, ornamental concrete modules, the current façade doesn’t reflect the name of the building, which references the nearby Jardin Botanique. The concept proposes to cover the existing building with planter beds and a web of cables to form a vegetated green envelope. At the top of the building, a ‘chrysalis’ observation pod made of wood and steel offers views across the city.

Mei Architects inscribes tower in Utrecht with poetic verse about life in the city

A new residential tower by Mei Architects and Planners on the streets of Churchilllaan, Utrecht, hopes to revitalize property design in an area typified by post-war reconstruction.Entitled ‘De Verkenner’, or ‘Scout’, the building stands as a gatekeeper to the district of Kanaleneiland. The tower is comprised of a mixed architectural program of housing: there are 71 private sector dwellings in the upper portion, 15 social sector dwellings specifically for autistic youths, and 9 live-work units in the base of the building.

The facade of the building is ‘slow made’ with an emphasis on sourcing local materials and production techniques.Tonally, the color of the exterior harmonizes with the surrounding brick buildings, but is itself made of concrete. The vertically focused design of the project is a response to the predominantly horizontal articulation of the flats that dominate the Kanaleneiland area. In an attempt to reduce noise pollution in the living areas,Mei Architects and planners has designed ‘De Verkenner’ as mostly closed in character, but balconies and openings increase towards the top of the building.

Denmark-based Studio LOKAL has won the competition for the design of a residential tower in Copenhagen, with The Hanging Gardens, its proposal for a merger of the historic brick buildings of Carlsberg with the concept of a personal garden for each resident.

Located on the site of a former vegetable market, the proposal aims to return to these homegrown roots by encouraging residents to grow their own produce in one of the tower’s gardens. Furthermore, the ground floor of the building will house a farmers market where residents can trade their own produce.

Its name derives from the owner's idea of integrating all of his cultural interests into the salon. The architects were challenged with coming up with a space to display them.

"The staff has curated a collection of books to showcase their ideas and personalities," said the architects. "The owner's idea [was to] integrate music, art and other forms of cultural expression into a hair salon."

Prototype Square is one of three scaffolding-like pavilions at the Cēsis Beer Brewery, which Mailītis AIIM is transforming into a science and arts hub.

The brewery will remain open to the public throughout its ten-year transformation, so the architects wanted to test how a construction site can be used for public activities.

  Martello Tower Home

From the architect. A Sandstone Coastal Lookout

Situated on the highest point of a ridge overlooking Sydney’s Middle Harbour is a solid, 3 storey brick house built during the between the late 1950s and early 1960s, which has been complemented by contemporary additions bearing all the signature hallmarks of Luigi Rosselli Architecture: the sandstone base, the whitewashed walls, and the aerofoil vertical louvres placed next to “log-cabin” exterior wall cladding.

The front of the house features another Luigi Rosselli Architects key element – a lightwell containing an elliptical stair – framed by the sandstone Martello Tower* entry porch that, in its “partially ruined” state, opens up to the horizontal whitewashed concrete beams and roof lines that complete the new street elevation.

SA lab proposes modular trekking lodge for use in harsh icelandic landscapes

SA lab has designed a modular trekking lodge for use in harsh icelandic landscapes, influenced by the norse legend of yggdrasil — a mythical tree and symbol of life. conceived as a sanctuary where travellers can find everything they need for respite from their journey, the design of ‘under yggdrasil’ is based on traditional icelandic architectural forms and cultural symbols.

the suggested design by SA lab provides shelter from the elements while maintaining a symbiotic relationship with the natural environment surrounding it. composed of four separate prefabricated chambers, the lodge rests on a platform constructed atop a pile foundation, providing minimal environmental interference. a central technical zone in the center houses the boiler tank, medical equipment, and storage spaces, as well as the rainwater and sewage filtration systems, which provide reusable, purified, water supplies. in keeping with the environmentally conscious design, the external compartments are constructed of a framework of recycled steel and wood.
